An Alternistor Triac is a solid state AC bi-directional silicon switch designed specifically for highly inductive loads. It offers the same performance characteristics as two electrically separate SCRs wired back-to-back in a single package. They provide guaranteed gate trigger current levels in Quadrants I, II, and III of an AC current cycle. Gate triggering currents of 10 mA, 20, mA, 25 mA, 35mA, 50 mA, 80 mA and 100mA are offered. Alternistor Triacs are capable of controlling AC load currents from 6 to 60 amps and are rated to withstand operating voltages of 400 to 1,000 volts. Surface Mount Alternistor Triacs are available in TO 252 and TO 263 packages. Thru-hole Alternistor Triacs are available in TO 218 Iso, TO 218X Iso, TO 220, TO 220 Iso, and TO 251 packages. Alternistor Triacs are used in motor speed controls, heater controls and incandescent lighting controls that have high inductive loads. Typical applications include AC switching and phase control for temperature modulation controls (heating controls for blow dryers), lighting controls (dimmer switches), motor speed controls (power tools) and AC static switching relays.
